The Web of Tomorrow

By Jason OConnor (c) 2007

A woman switches on a tiny wireless chip that has been surgically implanted behind her ear, which then synchs up with the Web wherever she is in the world. The simple thought of logging on to the Internet triggers the system to turn on and connect to the Web. She could be on a bus or at the beach and from all outward appearances she's just staring off into space. One feature dominates all webmaster discussion boards, newsletters and acquired wisdom generally.  Search Engine Ranking.  Building a site is the quick part, now try getting people to view it, or even know it exists.

This section of Webmastertech is divided into five sections - click the book-marks below to go to the relevant part.

Improving Your Rank

Metatags and multiple submissions are only part of the answer.  Remember popularity?  The more sites that link to yours the better, so e-mail other relevant sites and offer a link exchange.  All webmasters want the same thing so they'll be surprisingly co-operative as long as your content won't damage the reputation of their site by being offensive, irrelevant or unprofessional.  That's us out then!

There is actually software out there which will examine backward links to your site, (i.e. all the sites which link to yours).  You can use this to check on your competitors backward links and approach the same sites for a reciprocal link exchange.

Also you can check the popularity of the sites which link to you.  The more popular they are the more valuable they are to you, so get submitting their sites to all the major search engines.  It helps you to help them.
